Closet Audit: What Is It And Why Do You Need It?

Refresh yourself in the new year of resolutions. January is normally when we set goals for the year. By February, a majority of us are still sitting on the couch thinking how to hit the reset button. Here’s why! When you fail to plan, you plan to fail, making it far more difficult to achieve the goals you set forth.

Last week we addressed the misconceptions a client has before a Closet Audit. Based off the responses of last week’s newsletter, several of you asked to explain the service in detail. By far, a Closet Audit is the best starting point when you want to change your wardrobe; it’s not as dreadful as you think, especially with my help.

WHAT IS A CLOSET AUDIT?

A Closet Audit is a styling process where I spend time with you and each piece in your wardrobe. My job is to determine what to keep, toss, based on pieces you don’t feel good wearing, that is stained, worn or outdated. Also, I will help you discover new ways to wear some of your favorites.

WHAT ARE THE MAIN STEPS OF A CLOSET AUDIT?

First, we start with a 30-minute consultation to help determine your style needs and goals. Next, we evaluate your in-season wardrobe for fit, style, relevance, condition and how every piece makes you feel. You can tell me “this is my go to work wear”, or “ I recently purchased this and not sure how to style it” or “ this belonged to a deceased family member and is special to me”. From these in-depth conversations, I able to determine what action each piece needs.

Notes are taken during the process, which may turn into a shopping list of items needed to fill any gaps in your wardrobe. No worries, if you are not ready to shop at that very moment, I keep a record of all our recommendations. Once the audit is complete, if there are items for donation, I deliver them to a local charity on your behalf. Whether you are left with a little or a lot after a closet audit, the goal is to ensure you feel good about every piece that hangs in your closet.

WHY WOULD SOMEONE NEED A CLOSET AUDIT?

The purpose of a Closet Audit is to make the process of putting an outfit together each morning simple. Everyone needs to have a Closet Audit at some point. Whether you have dream closet or one you’re spilling out of, it’s an easy place to store things. Over time, you lose track of what you own and neglect 80% of your wardrobe for years. When only your favorite pieces should align the walls of your closet where you can easily them, instead of being distracted by excess clutter.

HAVE YOU EVER HAD A CLOSET AUDIT?

You damn right! Every year, twice a year I enlist a stylist to audit my closet, which helps me understand the vulnerability and demands of a Closet Audit. There is something about having a fresh pair of eyes on your wardrobe and receiving encouragement when on the fence about what to rid. Think about it this way, your closet is a secret place full with clothes where lots of memories, whether good or bad are housed. Talking through some of the emotions around certain items, without judgment, can be really helpful. Having someone in your closet can be intimidating, but respect is a priority when it comes to your things. I am hired to be honest, so if something no longer works for you, I will let you know, but in a considerate and gentle way!

HOW OFTEN SHOULD SOMEONE HAVE A CLOSET AUDIT?

At least once or twice a year, preferably when the seasons change at spring/summer and fall/winter. After you have gone through your first audit, you’ll remember the tools and tips you learned that will help you self-audit throughout the year. It’s so easy to accumulate stuff in such a short period of time. Getting in there and clearing out the old not only leaves room for new purchases but a refreshing feeling!
